When can babies eat oyster?
Oysters can be offered once baby is about 6 months old and ready for solids, but only thoroughly cooked. They live in tidal estuaries, salty bays and coastal waters worldwide. They are bivalves, like mussels and clams.
Oysters are a strong source of protein, omega-3, choline, B12, zinc, calcium and iron. Their cadmium content varies by where they come from. Cadmium is a heavy metal, and too much harms the developing nervous system. When the family eats oysters often, include them as a single part of a diet with plenty of variety.
Cook thoroughly
Oysters can make people ill with foodborne infections, and the illness may be severe in babies. Never serve them raw. Cook until the center reaches 145 F (63 C).
How do you prepare oyster for babies?
Choose fresh, good-quality oysters and cook them thoroughly. Chop them fine and mix into soft food. After 18 months, let your child practice picking up bite-sized pieces with a fork.
Do not serve whole oysters before 24 months. They need a lot of chewing. Wait until you know your child chews well with the back teeth, and first demonstrate chewing with your mouth open.
Canned oysters can be given from 6 months as long as they are finely chopped. To cut sodium, pick a brand with less salt or none added.
There is no safe age for raw oysters. Vibrio in particular causes watery diarrhea. The risk is higher for people on stomach-acid-lowering drugs and those with weak immunity.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Is oyster a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: high
Oysters are firm and slippery, so choking risk is high. Cook thoroughly, chop fine and mix into soft food.
Oysters are firm and slippery, which makes choking a serious risk. Prepare them to suit your baby's age: chop fine and mix into soft food.
Stay within arm's reach of your baby during meals.
Is oyster a common allergen?
Mollusks such as oysters are not on the World Health Organization's global priority allergen list, which names only crustaceans such as shrimp and crab. Many national regulators, though, count both as common allergens, so the app treats oyster as a shellfish allergen.
Shellfish allergy usually starts in adulthood. Most people who develop it in childhood do not outgrow it.
People allergic to oysters may react to other mollusks (mussels, octopus, scallop, snail, squid). Their risk of reacting to crustaceans (shrimp, crab, lobster) is over 70 percent. If you suspect a shellfish allergy, see an allergist before oysters.
A shellfish allergy does not mean a finned fish allergy. Still, fish prepared in the same facility with shared tools can pick up shellfish proteins.
Start with a small amount and watch your baby.
