When can babies eat lobster?

You can introduce lobster once baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months, as long as it is cooked through.

Lobsters are shellfish. They are found in both cold and warm waters worldwide. Cold-water kinds live in the North Atlantic. Warm-water kinds live in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and off the Americas and East Asia.

Protein and omega-3 fats are the main gains. Zinc, selenium, potassium, magnesium, choline, calcium, B6 and B12 come along too.

Cook it well

Lobster raises the risk of foodborne illness. Symptoms can be more severe in babies. Cook until the inside reaches 145 F (63 C).

How do you prepare lobster for babies?

General tips

Boil or steam the meat. This keeps it tender. Remove all shell. In the early months, chop the meat very fine and stir it into a soft food, or make a large cake.

As baby grows, offer shreds and bite-sized pieces.

Do not serve

Tomalley, also called lobster paste, is the organ that works as the liver and pancreas. It collects toxins and pollutants from the water. Many health groups advise people of every age to skip it. Raw lobster also carries a high risk of illness. Do not give either to a baby.

Mercury and sodium

Depending on where it lived, lobster can hold low to moderate mercury. Too much mercury can affect a child's nervous system development. Serve lobster as one part of a balanced diet, spaced out over time.

Sodium can be high depending on the type, brand and cooking. Babies usually eat small amounts. Stay away from salty ready-made products.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months

6 months · How to prepare mixed into foodmash

Cook the lobster through and remove the shell. Chop the meat very fine or shred it. Stir it into a soft food such as mashed avocado or pureed vegetables. Do not leave any round pieces.

6 months · How to prepare as a cakeslice

Cut: Large piece

Make a soft, moist cake from cooked lobster meat. Keep it larger than baby's mouth. This lets baby practice taking bites.

9 months

9 months · How to prepare as shreds and small piecescube

Cut: Shredded

Pull shell-free cooked meat into thin shreds. Baby can pick them up with the fingers. You can still stir the meat into mashed vegetables or avocado. If baby overfills the mouth, break the cake into bite-sized pieces.

12 months

12 months · How to prepare as chopped meat and cakescube

Chop the cooked meat small or make cakes. Keep the meat tender. After 18 months, if you trust the chewing and listening skills, you can offer bigger pieces such as claw meat. Skip firm, rubbery crab meat and cylinder-shaped pieces. Sit next to your child at meals.

Is lobster a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: medium

Lobster meat can be chewy, round and slippery. Remove all shell, keep the meat tender and avoid round pieces.

Lobster meat can be tender. It may also turn out chewy, round and slick. These traits raise the choking risk.

Remove every bit of shell. Boil or steam the meat to keep it soft. Chop round pieces fine or pull them into shreds. Stay next to baby, within arm's reach, for the whole meal.

Is lobster a common allergen?

Lobster is a common allergen. The World Health Organization counts crustaceans among the common allergens. A person allergic to lobster may also react to crab, shrimp and crawfish. A reaction to mollusks such as oysters, mussels, octopus and squid is less likely.

Shellfish allergy often starts in adulthood. When it starts in childhood, it usually does not go away. If you suspect an allergy, talk to an allergist before offering lobster.

A shellfish allergy does not mean a finned fish allergy. Still, products prepared in the same kitchen with shared tools can pass proteins along.

Some lobster is preserved with sulfites. Sulfites are seldom an allergen, but people with asthma can still react to them.

Start with a small amount and watch closely. If there is no reaction, raise the amount slowly. Once baby tolerates it, serve it at least once a week if you can. You do not need to try each type of shellfish one by one.
