When can babies eat ground pork?
When to start
Well-cooked ground pork can be offered once your baby is ready for solids, usually around 6 months.
Pork is widely eaten around the world, though some faiths and communities avoid it. The choice is yours as a family. Ground pork goes into pie fillings, meatballs, stir-fries, and many other dishes.
Why it matters
Ground pork offers plenty of protein and fat. It also brings iron, zinc, selenium, choline, and the B vitamins B6 and B12. They help with growth and the brain, and they back up red blood cells and immunity.
How do you prepare ground pork for babies?
Always cook ground pork through, with the center reaching 160 F (71 C). Raw or undercooked pork can cause parasitic and bacterial illness, including trichinosis, taeniasis, and yersiniosis.
In the early months, mixing the meat into a soft dish or forming large, soft meatballs is the safest approach.
Never raw or pink
Do not serve ground pork that is still pink. Check the center with a thermometer.
Store-bought meatballs
Prepared or frozen meatballs are often small and firm. Crumble them into a soft dish instead. They may also hold milk, egg, sesame, and wheat, so read the label.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · How to mix into a mashmash
Cut: Shredded
Cook the pork all the way through and break it into very small crumbles. Stir them into a soft, scoopable dish such as mashed potato or tomato sauce.
6 months · Large, soft meatballslice
Cut: Large piece
Shape the meatball wider than your baby's mouth, so that it measures 2 inches (5 cm) or more. Cook it until the center reads 160 F (71 C). It should squash easily between thumb and finger.
9 months
9 months · Small crumbles and bitescube
Once your baby starts to pinch food, offer soft crumbles or small pieces of meatball. The meat must reach 160 F (71 C) and mash under light pressure. Simmering in sauce, or adding breadcrumbs, egg, or milk to the mix, keeps it tender.
12 months
12 months · Bites and mixed dishescube
Cut: Bite sized piece
Cut soft meatballs into bite-sized pieces for your child to pick up by hand or with a fork. Crumbled pork also works mixed into grains, pasta, or vegetables.
12 months · Whole meatballslice
Offer a whole meatball to dip in sauce and bite into.
Is ground pork a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: medium
Ground pork is hard to chew and dries out when overcooked. Stir it into a soft dish, or form large, soft meatballs.
Ground pork can be hard to chew and move around the mouth, which raises the choking risk. Prepare it to suit your baby's age, and do not overcook it, since dry meat is harder to swallow. Stay close for the whole meal.
Do not leave meatballs small and firm. They should be large and soft.
Is ground pork a common allergen?
Pork is not a common allergen, though reactions have been reported. Some tick bites, chiefly from the Lone Star tick, can lead to an allergy to the sugar alpha-gal. The reaction arrives 3 to 8 hours after eating red meat. People with alpha-gal allergy may also react to dairy, gelatin, and organ meats.
Rarely, people with a cat allergy react to pork as well. This is called pork-cat syndrome.
