Cheerios and O-shaped cereals, served for 9 months

When can babies eat Cheerios and O-shaped cereals?

Plain Cheerios and similar O-shaped cereals can be offered around 9 months if they contain no honey. Offer them once your baby grabs a ring and takes it to the mouth without help. Most babies gain this skill closer to 9 months and some gain it earlier.

Plain Cheerios are made from whole grain oats. They are low in sugar and fortified with iron. They also give fiber, calcium, folate and zinc. Fiber supports digestion and regular bowel movements.

About the product

The oats are puffed. The ring crunches first, then softens in the mouth. Many families reach for it first when they want a cereal snack for little ones.

How do you prepare Cheerios and O-shaped cereals for babies?

Pick the right product

Choose the plain kind, or a similar cereal with 5 g or less added sugar per serving, under 200 mg sodium, and fortified with iron. Do not serve honey varieties before 12 months. Read the label each time you shop, since ingredients can change.

Serve the cereal a few times a week or less so your baby explores a wide range of fresh, colorful foods.

A note on phosphate

Cheerios contain tripotassium phosphate as a preservative. This is not a concern for healthy people. Children with kidney disease may be sensitive to phosphate. In that case, talk to your doctor.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

Scatter plain, low-sugar, honey-free O cereal on the high chair tray. Your baby trains the pincer grasp on the small rings. It is fine once your baby can grab rings and feed them to themselves. Serve it toward the end of the meal so your baby does not fill up on it.

Keep choosing the plain kind with 5 g or less added sugar per serving that is fortified with iron. If your child starts to want little else, serve it less often and put fresh, colorful foods first.

Is Cheerios and O-shaped cereals a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: low

Plain Cheerios dissolve easily and need little chewing, so the risk is low. If they stick to the tongue and cause gagging, soak them in milk or water. Never put them in your baby's mouth. Let your baby pick them up.

Plain Cheerios are not a common choking risk. They soften with only a little liquid, even saliva, and need no chewing. Some other O-shaped cereals dissolve less easily and may be riskier. Still, when a baby self-feeds the risk stays low. Stay with your baby during meals.

If gagging happens

If the rings stick to the tongue and cause gagging, soften them in breast milk, formula, milk or water.

Is Cheerios and O-shaped cereals a common allergen?

It depends on the variety. Some Cheerios types contain allergens such as peanuts, tree nuts and wheat. Read the label before buying.

Plain Cheerios are made from oats. Oats are not a common trigger of IgE-mediated allergy. Reactions have been reported when oats touch the skin of sensitive people. Oats are a known trigger of a delayed allergy called FPIES. In this condition repeated vomiting and diarrhea start a few hours after eating, and fluid loss can follow. Most children outgrow it in early childhood.

Oats are naturally gluten-free. But they can pick up wheat, barley and rye along the way. The safety of Cheerios for children with celiac disease is debated. The plain kind sold in some countries contains wheat. Ask your doctor if celiac disease is a concern.

Serve a small portion at first and keep an eye out for symptoms. If there is no reaction, raise the portion.
