When can babies eat cashew yogurt?
Cashew yogurt can start when your baby is about 6 months old and ready for solids. Keep in mind that cashews, a common allergen, are what it is made from.
Cashew yogurt is a recent product. It is made by blending cashews with water and bacterial cultures. The nut's natural creaminess gives it a rich texture. Live cultures may add a probiotic benefit. The cashew tree is native to South America.
Cashew yogurt gives some plant fat, protein and iron. Calcium and vitamin D are added to some types, which helps bones and immune defense. Some brands use live bacterial cultures that give probiotic benefit for your baby's digestion.
How do you prepare cashew yogurt for babies?
Label
You can pick products that say they hold live cultures and added calcium and vitamin D. Check sugar and salt on the label. Also check whether the label lists honey.
Preparation by age
The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.
6 months
6 months · How to serve in a bowlmash
Put cashew yogurt in a bowl. Your baby can scoop it up by hand or eat it from a spoon you have loaded in advance. Holding the spoon out in the air makes it easier to grab. It also works as the base of a sweet or savory sauce.
9 months
9 months · How to serve with a spoonmash
At this age your baby may pick up a pre-loaded spoon alone. Keep serving the bowl and give plenty of chances to grab the spoon. If your baby tires fast, switch between finger-eating, a spoon held out in the air and a spoon resting on the bowl edge. Several spoons at once can help.
12 months
12 months · How to servemash
If you still hold the spoon out, it is time to load it and leave it on the bowl edge so your child can pick it up and try. Be patient. Steady, independent spoon use may only come after age 2.
Is cashew yogurt a choking hazard for babies?
Choking risk: low
Low risk because it is creamy and runny. Serve it in a bowl or on a pre-loaded spoon and stay close while your baby eats.
Cashew yogurt is a low-risk food. Any food can still cause choking. Prepare it for your baby's age and stay with your baby during meals.
Is cashew yogurt a common allergen?
Cashew yogurt is made from cashews, a common allergen. But most cashew yogurt holds very little allergenic protein. So it is not enough to introduce cashew as an allergen, or to keep up exposure once allergy is ruled out. To introduce cashew, use finely ground cashew or thinned cashew butter.
