When can babies eat blood sausage?

Blood sausage can be served around 6 months, once baby is ready. The sausage must be prepared for the age, cooked through and free of honey, because of the risk of infant botulism. It is high in sodium, but an occasional taste within a varied diet is fine.

No honey

Honey is never given before 12 months in any form. Check whether the sausage contains honey.

What it is

This is an old food, made so that every part of a slaughtered animal gets used. The recipe blends the blood of goat, pig or waterfowl with ground meat. Herbs, spices, vegetables and grains go in too. The mix is shaped into cakes, links or patties. One group is eaten cold like deli meat. The other is served hot. Its hundreds of types include black pudding, morcilla and mutura.

Nutrition

It usually supplies protein and fat, plus choline, iron, selenium, zinc, B12 and vitamin K. It is also high in sodium. Babies who feed themselves usually get little sodium from solid food.

How do you prepare blood sausage for babies?

Reheat even cured or precooked sausage until hot all the way through, as this lowers food poisoning risk. Blood sausage made with raw meat must be cooked to kill harmful bacteria. Internal temperature targets are as follows. Sausage with fish or shellfish: 145 F (63 C). Cook sausage made from red meat, whether beef, lamb or pork, to a safe 160 F (71 C). Sausage with chicken: 165 F (74 C).

Dried and smoked

Jerky, dried sausage and smoked meat are firm and tough to chew. Do not serve them to babies.

Preparation by age

The same food is served differently at each age. What matters is how your baby sits, grasps and chews, more than the calendar.

6 months · How to prepare mixed into foodmash

Crumble well cooked blood sausage very small or chop it finely. Mix it into a soft food eaten with a spoon, such as vegetable purée, porridge or thick stew. If there is a removable casing, peel it off first. At this age, skip crumbles on their own as well as slices and large chunks. Cook until the meat or fish inside reaches its safe internal temperature. Do not serve dried sausage or smoked meat.

Cut: Shredded

Mix small crumbles of soft, well cooked blood sausage into sauces or spoonable foods. Cook until the meat inside reaches its safe internal temperature. Keep avoiding dried sausage and jerky, which are too hard for baby to chew.

Cut: Shredded

Remove the casing and serve the cooked crumbles. When your child seems ready, you may leave the casing on. Cut the sausage lengthwise into four long sticks. Cut patties into thin strips about two adult fingers wide, or break them into bite-sized pieces. Fresh morcilla and similar types hold rice or loose grains. These scatter in the mouth and can make a child gag. Do not cut into coins or rounds. Hold off on firm dried blood sausage until at least 24 months.

Is blood sausage a choking hazard for babies?

Choking risk: high

Blood sausage is cylindrical, firm and springy. Give baby small, well cooked crumbles mixed into food. Avoid round slices and dried sausage.

Blood sausage is often cylindrical and has a firm, springy texture. These traits raise the choking risk. Give baby small crumbles inside a food. Do not cut it into coins or rounds.

At 2 years, a child with mature eating skills can try biting a whole sausage. A whole sausage is less risky than one cut into rounds. Between 24 and 36 months, if the child follows directions and chews hard foods well, round slices can be offered. Give one slice at a time with the child seated and supervised.

Safe setting

Seat baby upright and stay within arm's reach during meals.

Is blood sausage a common allergen?

Blood sausage rarely causes allergy. Still, there can be allergy to meats in the sausage, such as beef or pork. Allergens like dairy, tree nuts and wheat may also have been added. Read the label carefully.

Alpha-gal is a sugar, and allergy to it is tied to bites from certain ticks. In the US that means the Lone Star tick, and other ticks cause it elsewhere. This sugar is in the meat of all non-primate mammals. A delayed allergic reaction appears 3 to 8 hours after eating red meat. Some of these people also react to the small amount of the sugar in dairy, gelatin and animal organs. Pork products can carry a higher allergy risk for people with cat allergy. This is called pork-cat syndrome.

At the first try

Offer a small amount for the first few servings. If all is well, raise the amount slowly over later meals.

Frequently asked questions about blood sausage

Can babies share blood sausage?

Yes, provided it is thoroughly cooked, free of honey and prepared to cut the choking risk. It is high in sodium, so serve it only occasionally.

Can blood sausage be eaten uncooked?

No. Even cured and precooked types should be thoroughly reheated. Raw-meat types must reach the internal temperature of the meat inside.

Can I serve it sliced?

Coins and rounds raise the choking risk. Around 12 months use strips or sticks. Rounds can be tried only between 24 and 36 months, with supervision.
